We have been helping give a Meditation Teacher Training course here in India, and, as part of the training, we talked about how to give magnetic classes. But the same principles apply to other areas of life: doing your job with magnetism, or having magnetic relationships, or developing the magnetism that draws God. Magnetism, you see, is produced whenever there is a flow of energy. It follows a basic law stated by Paramhansa Yogananda: “The greater the will, the greater the flow of energy. And the greater the flow of energy, the greater the magnetism.” It is not too simplistic to say that this is also the law of success in any endeavor.

The greater the will, the greater the flow of energy. The greater the flow of energy, the greater the magnetism. Paramhansa Yogananda

The greater the will, the greater the flow of energy. The greater the flow of energy, the greater the magnetism. Paramhansa Yogananda

One of Swami Kriyananda’s first music recordings was called, “Say ‘YES’ to Life!” Saying “yes” enthusiastically is the best way to increase your energy. Whatever we do with enthusiasm will be magnetic, which is why we always see dynamic energy in magnetic people. A second trait of successful people is high focus or concentration of energy. In many cases of true genius, the focus reaches such levels of concentration that they’re unaware of the need to eat or even to sleep until their project is done. On a very minor scale, sometimes when I am concentrating on painting a picture, I will become aware, some hours later, of the fact that my legs have been asleep. So, we have two key elements, enthusiasm and focus.

But we also have to remove the impediments to the flow of energy. Here is an example: Fiber optic cables are made of hair-thin strands of ultra-pure glass. A laser pulse can travel over a hundred miles through one of those strands before it must again be amplified. There are two critical factors both of which are also important to a successful life. The first is that the glass must be as pure as possible. Any distortions or impurities will block or deflect the flow of photons. In us, these impediments are things like pride, or lack of confidence, or negativity, or, in fact, any egocentric thoughts. The reason we enjoy movies or sports is because we focus deeply and forget ourselves.

The second vital element in a fiber optic cable is a mirror-like covering, which keeps the photons from straying off course. For us this means we must learn to redirect our thoughts back to the task at hand. A good tool for this is to set a kitchen timer for a period of uninterrupted concentration. While it is running, don’t multitask, don’t space out, keep your mind focused. Just do what you need to do.

So here is the simple formula:
1) Be enthusiastic about whatever you are doing.
2) Forget yourself and focus on the task alone.
3) If your mind wanders, bring it back. And

4) Stay with one thing until you finish it.

Does this sound like the same advice we would give to someone trying to deepen his meditations? Yes, of course. Our spiritual life and our everyday routines are cut of the same cloth. It is all God’s light.

With joy,

Nayaswami Jyotish

  5. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with such simplicity .I always wondered how I feel tired while doing work which I don’t like and never get tired while working on things which I like , example I really feel tired to go to office but I am never tired of painting for hours.

  7. Pranaam,

It was an honour to meet you at Delhi Ashram. This message is so simply written but is so complete and powerful that after reading itself I am feeling with this approach I can do anything.

I really like the way you articulate as it is very difficult to write concise+ complete message and end it up with 2-3 simple things we can do. Writing concisely is a very difficult task…as one of the poets (I believe it was william wordworth) wrote to his wife “Dear, I am sorry I am writing you a long letter as I did not have time to write the short one” :-):-):-).

May Guru and God bless you with more energy and passion to continue to guide us.

    Aum

  10. Always your sharing is such great reminders, sometime I get caught up in what is going outside I do forget not for long but with help I come back to who I really am and who God and Guru are in my life. I thank them both for you and Devi and all our spiritual leaders.

  11. I got this at exactly the right moment, and I am most grateful for it. Our being “in the moment” is a practice that we can so easily lose. Meditation is as well because when life’s events seemingly take us away from it we get off track and our habit becomes broken. For me this day, I decided to pay the bills first. I do this on-line, of course, and it ended up to be the ride of my life. I actually ended up spending one hour and twenty-two minutes on the phone trying to settle the issues I encountered. I went to just transfer money to “needing” to change my password, to noting a charge put on on the acct. that wasn’t mine, thus my credit card was canceled, a conference call was made to the company who charged me, and then the fraud dept. was going to take care of it for me, to then having to pay the bill I initially went on-line to pay in a different way with another agent. All of this put me so very behind to do a garden job for pay and I just sat down with my heart racing wanting to disconnect from the world. Would I have dealt more evenly and peacefully if I had not tried to do banking first. I think I would have. Learning to say “NO” is so important and so very necessary to preserve our sanity, peace, and to not allow ourselves be used by others. I personally find that many of the advances in technology cause more problems than to solve them, but for now that is what we have. So, making time and a time set to not accept interruption is imperative is important for our practice, and also for simply setting an exact time out is a practice in itself. The cord must be cut at times as we can not allow the constancy of this world to dictate our days events, and thus our physical and mental health. I am so glad to have come back to the computer after sitting for a few minutes and first thing finding the article above. It was/is such a glorious reminder. Blessings.

  15. Thank you dear Jyotish for the Divine advice. There is a saying that one cannot teach an old dog new tricks. I am not saying I am not a dog nor that I am very old yet, . . . just a little. But I know I will learn this someday: How to concentrate and how to use the gifts and talents that God gave me to share with others. AUM
So I am grateful to not be out of time yet and: I SHALL! With the grace from God and Guru and help from Divine friends such you and dear Devi. Sending you and Devi so much Joy and gratitude. Mariana
